Final Cut

This is the final cut of our preliminary music video, which was edited together by Luke. The shots are effective and the editing works well to showcase the song.

Overall I like this video and it was fun creating it

Professional short films: textual analysis

3 Minutes
This short film is about a guy who has 3 minutes to fight and kill an opponent, in a shipping yard style location. When the 3 minutes are up the survivor must then face a new opponent, and so the cycle continues. I think that this is a good short film because it has an intriguing plot and interesting characters that are enjoyable to watch. It uses range of shots to tell the story, something that I will use in my coursework to make sure the plot is told in an effective way.

The Most Beautiful Thing
This short film is about a boy and a deaf girl who meet each other during break one day at school. They click with one another instantly and begin a cute romance, all in the months leading up to the school prom. I like this short film because the plot is different to other short films and it is generally told well with interesting characters.

Plastic
This short film is one that covers the topic of self appearance and confidence in the way that we look. The film features a young female as she is getting ready for a date. As she prepares herself she discovers that her face and body are made of plastic, and so she begins to re-sculpt herself, trying to change herself into what she believes to be 'perfect'. As it gets closer to the date she realises that she doesn't feel comfortable with her new self and therefore re-moulds herself back to her original shape. The main thing that intrigues me about this short film is the use of editing to make the actress' face seem like it is made of plastic and that she can change the shape.

Preliminary task filming day

On the 14th July, Charlie and I filmed our preliminary task video! We went to Garden Cattery at about 4pm to film. The location looked to be perfect for our video. The enclosed square shape of the cattery made it a very nice looking setting and it is obvious what the cages are containing. With the filming, we do not think that it could have gone much better. Nathaniel's performance was very enthusiastic, the cats were friendly and liked being on camera, and we managed to get it all filmed in just under an hour. The next step will be to edit our video together, and then it will be posted on our blogs.

Here are some pictures taken by Charlie on the filming day.

Preliminary task - script

Here are the lyrics to our song that will be sung by our actor. We are not using all the lyrics as we are only doing a minute of the video:

What's new, Pussycat?
Whoa, whoa
What's new, Pussycat?
Whoa, whoa

Pussycat, Pussycat, I've got flowers
And lots of hours
To spend with you.
So go and powder your cute little pussycat nose!
Pussycat, Pussycat, I love you
Yes, I do!
You and your pussycat nose!

What's new, Pussycat?
Whoa, whoa
What's new, Pussycat?
Whoa, whoa

(fade out the sound from here)

Pussycat, Pussycat, you're so thrilling
And I'm so willing
To care for you.
So go and make up your cute little pussycat eyes!

Shot of the cattery house and sign if its there. Camera turns 90 degrees and gets covered. Uncovered to show the man and the receptionist talking by the cages.

Man walks to the cages and picks up a microphone. Camera pans around 180 degrees to focus on man who starts singing lyrics.

After first verse, camera turns 90 degrees or so and focuses on cats. Turns back to the man who is in the cage with cats stroking them. Camera moves to a different cage where the man is singing some more. Keep this sort of camera shots up until the picture fads.

Looking at examplar student blogs

In today's lesson we had to compare three student blogs that were released by the exam board, AQA. These are the following blogs:

http://blogs.grammar.sch.gg/00laner01
http://blogs.grammar.sch.gg/gabriellesmith
http://blogs.grammar.sch.gg/danieldegaris

Whilst looking through these blogs we compared them to a mark scheme to see what we individually thought they would get marked as. Through discussion and comparison to the exam board marks, Gabrielle's blog scored the highest with 20/20 on research and planning; Rebecca's blog scored 17/20 and Daniel's blog scored a high level 3 with 15/20.

After looking at these blogs I have come up with three ways in which I can improve my own blog:
  1. More depth in blog posts
  2. Justification of ideas
  3. Clear presentation of ideas

Creative task

For this task we were each given a random photo that we were told nothing about and had to think of three questions about the picture. We then swapped pictures with another person and answered them. We then finally swapped pictures for one more time and used the answers to create an idea.

This is the picture that I ended up with and these were the questions and their answers:
  • Why isn't the photographer running from the mammoth? because he isn't there, the camera is on a timer
  • How did the person get there? a parachute
  • Where did the mammoth even come from? the set of the newest Ice Age film
So this is the idea that I came up with...

The photographer parachutes through a portal into the animated world where he finds Manny the Mammoth from the Ice Age films. The man then goes on a journey through the animated world, trying to find a way back to the real world, along his way taking pictures to document the experience.
